"There's nothing inherently medical about dying. It's much larger than medicine. It's purely human. Part of that admission is to keep all of this couched in humanity, not medical science or social science, but really a full arch of humanity. Kindness, total openness, vulnerability, exchange... This is potent stuff."
- former medical director of Zen Hospice Project BJ Miller, in the Netflix documentary End Game
Happy New Year 2019!
Our next community potluck is Wednesday, January 16th, from 6-9pm at our home at 34 Blue Ridge Avenue, Asheville. Bring a dish to share, a friend, but please leave pets at home. Attendance has been a mix of neighbors, friends, and people interested in or involved with end of life work, and their friends and colleagues. We hope you can join us.
Since getting the property in May 2018, we have put forth the intention that this would be a home that people who were dying would choose to spend the rest of their lives in. This stemmed from Gabriel's experience as a hospice nurse, and the idea that life, and the end of life, doesn't have to be a medical phenomenon, and doesn't have to be in an institution, if one didn't want it to be. Erik's passion for making a home that is comfortable and inviting fit well with this intention.
While we are still looking at models of what that could look like, and next steps in forming a non profit 501c3 to support it, our hearts remain open to what care and support within a community can be, from our current roommates, to our neighbors, and the people working in the end of life who use the space for meetings.
The house looks pretty different from when we first got it in May. The carpet on the first floor is gone, and wood floors are in their place. Many of the rooms and shared spaces are furnished. Plants fill the house with life. We'll continue to work on getting thresholds between some rooms, putting up baseboards and crown molding, and countertops in the studio. The first floor of the house does have ramp access in the back, and we also want to have this available at the front of the house.
