Holding Space

Pecha Kucha Presentation, House Concert, and Potluck Reminder

Land Acknowledgment: We acknowledge that this beautiful land that we call our home was forcibly vacated of its original and rightful caretakers, the Iswa (Catawba) and Gadua (Cherokee) people who have cared for it for millennia and, through resilience and persistence, despite generations of state-supported acts of removal and genocide, continue to do so.

December Potluck & White Elephant

Please join us this Wednesday, December 18th, from 6-9pm at our home at 34 Blue Ridge Avenue, Asheville. Bring a dish, a guest, but please leave pets at home. If you feel like participating in a White Elephant Gift exchange, bring a gift! Excessive effort isn’t necessary — it can be new, secondhand, a regift, or something that no longer “sparks joy” for you, but might spark joy for someone else! To lower the barriers to participation, if you don’t have time to wrap it, we’ll have gift bags on the porch that you can drop your gift in before you enter. How simple is that!?

We welcome neighbors, friends, people interested in or involved with end of life work, and colleagues to come together to share a meal and strengthen connections. Meet new people; expand and deepen your community.

(While there are a few parking spaces right next to the house, please reserve this for people needing to park close. Please do not park on the grass – there are fig trees planted there. There is a Baptist Church on the corner of the next street over, Mitchell Ave, and Haywood Road, that has a large parking lot. The house itself has a ramp that can be used by people who use a wheelchair to get into the main floor of the house, where all activity of the potluck will take place.)

Erik was asked if he would be interested in giving a presentation on our project, Holding Space, for a PechaKucha Asheville series on “Breaking the Mold” which took place last month. Pecha Kucha has some similarities to TED Talks in that it’s an international speaking platform with cities hosting their own chapters, sometimes around a specific theme. It differs from TED in that the format, sometimes called “20 by 20,” is more specific: 20 slides advance automatically every 20 seconds, so you end up with a specifically timed 6 minute and 40 second presentation.
In case you missed the event, a video of the presentation has been uploaded to YouTube. Feel free to share the video!

Jodi McLaren and Asher Leigh performed a house concert entitled, “We’re All Going To Die” to formally kick off their relationship as well as their band baby. It was an intimate setting to enjoy hot tea, warm melodies, and soulful reflection. Follow Holding Space on Facebook to get alerts about events like this!

Jess Engebretson is a freelance journalist working on a story for a San Francisco based NPR station. She met Erik while he was digging a grave at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary and learned about our project. She stopped by the house last month to interview Gabriel about the philosophy behind Holding Space and visions for the future. We’ll keep you posted when the story airs.
