Holding Space

Our first death and home funeral, new website and logo, and an upcoming presentation, and Friendsgiving potluck.

Land Acknowledgment: We acknowledge that this beautiful land that we call our home was forcibly vacated of its original and rightful caretakers, the Iswa (Catawba) and Gadua (Cherokee) people who have cared for it for millennia and, through resilience and persistence, despite generations of state-supported acts of removal and genocide, continue to do so.

November Potluck

Please join us this Wednesday, November 20th, from 6-9pm at our home at 34 Blue Ridge Avenue, Asheville. Bring a dish, a guest, but please leave pets at home. We welcome neighbors, friends, people interested in or involved with end of life work, and colleagues to come together to share a meal and strengthen connections. Meet new people; expand and deepen your community.

(While there are a few parking spaces right next to the house, please reserve this for people needing to park close. Please do not park on the grass – there are fig trees planted there. There is a Baptist Church on the corner of the next street over, Mitchell Ave, and Haywood Road, that has a large parking lot. The house itself has a ramp that can be used by people who use a wheelchair to get into the main floor of the house, where all activity of the potluck will take place.)

*Please note that, due to the news that follows, a photographer will be present at the potluck, capturing candid photos. If you wish not to have your photo taken, please find the photographer and express your wishes to her directly.

You may have noticed a new look! In last month’s newsletter, we told you about an event we were selected for an event called Make a Mark, where a team of designers came together on a Saturday for a 12-hour design marathon. Not only did they create a complete website for us, but they also designed a logo! Click on the screenshot below to explore our new website: www.holdingspaceasheville.org

“Make a Mark is a 12-hour design and development marathon benefitting local humanitarian causes. This event brings together designers, developers, copywriters, and other creatives to create pro-bono work for deserving causes.”

Yvette passed away in the early morning of Monday October 21st at home with her beloved Eve at her side, surrounded by the love of Speech Melissa, her buddy Erik, and “the other one.” Music and cuddles made the difficult hours more bearable, as Yvette labored to let go of the physical world. The words of Tracy Chapman’s The Promise hung in the stillness, and Yvette slipped away quietly the moment the others all fell asleep. That morning, Gabriel and Erik prepared for the home funeral in the way the CEOLT After Death Care course has prepared them, with special help and encouragement from Meredith Springs. Yvette lay in state in her favorite room of the house, surrounded by flowers and photos of beautiful memories. The community showed up in force, with food, music, and hugs. Two of Yvette’s kids, Anthony and Marilyn, were able to fly in to mourn Yvette and be with Eve.

Family, friends, and community decorated the outside of the biodegradable coffin with art and messages for Yvette. Dressed in her biker gear, Yvette had her favorite Hole donut, gummy frogs, and riding boots to take with her on her journey to her final resting place overlooking a bridge, especially meaningful to Yvette as a devotee of the Orisha Oshun, at Carolina Memorial Sanctuary.

Erik will be presenting 20 slides for 20 seconds each on Holding Space for Pecha Kucha Night Asheville’s  collection of talks on Breaking the Mold on Friday November 22nd at 7pm at The Grove Complex. Visit

Feel free to bring friends and family – Follow this link to the full event details and RSVP on Facebook!
