“We influence our lives, but we don’t control them, and the same goes for how they end. No matter how bravely you adapt to loss and how cannily you navigate our fragmented health system, dying will still represent the ultimate loss of control.

But you don’t have to be a passive victim. You retain moral agency. You can keep shaping your life all the way to its end — as long as you seize the power to imagine, to arrange support, and to plan.”

– Katy Butler author of “Knocking on Heaven’s Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death” (Scribner, 2013) and “The Art of Dying Well: A Practical Guide to a Good End of Life” (Scribner, 2019) in How to prepare yourself for a good end of life

February Potluck

Our next community potluck is Wednesday, February 20th, from 6-9pm at our home at 34 Blue Ridge Avenue, Asheville. Bring a dish, a guest, but please leave pets at home. Join a mix of neighbors, friends, and people interested in or involved with end of life work, and colleagues, as we share a meal and form and strengthen connections.

This month, we extend a special welcome to Kimberly Paul who is on her #LiveWellDieWell tour across the country in her RV. Author of “Bridging the Gap: Life Lessons from the Dying” and host of the “Death by Design” podcast, Kimberly will have an event at Malaprops Bookstore/Cafe the previous night, Tuesday, Feb 19th at 6:00pm. Malaprops is located at 55 Haywood St. in Downtown Asheville.

“Remember that your voice does matter. The way you live your life can change another life. When it comes right down to it, what matters most is love. And it all begins with loving yourself.” – Kimberly C. Paul

Especially on cold winter days, the sun room brings nature indoors. Chairs and a variety of houseplants fill a room with bright windows awash in sunlight.

Earlier this month, Gabriel took the class “How to Start a Nonprofit” at the Small Business Center at A-B Tech.

We continue to search for board members who would be invested in shaping what Holding Space will be and how it will best serve our friends and neighbors at the end of life.

In the next few months, we hope to incorporate and submit paperwork for our 501(c)(3) organization.
